Taking the Kids: Family-Friendly Resort Options Abound in the Caribbean

AAH … the blessed sunshine, the white sand beach that stretches for 12 miles, the happy parents and giggling kids building sandcastles and playing. That’s right. It may be January but Turks and Caicos’ famous Grace Bay Beach is packed with families, most with younger children, including many toddlers, babies and preschoolers, who especially enjoy the calm waters. “When we were in Hawaii, the water was too rough for them to go in,” said Shelly Chrenik, as she watched her two young kids and niece and nephew, all 6...

Active Pursuits

From a country that currently has only two golf courses (on Provo and Grand Turk), the TCI golf scene is somewhat limited. However, rumors persist that the Northwest Point area will get a golf course in the near future. Provo Golf & Country Club, on Grace Bay Road (tel. 649/946-5833; www.provogolfclub.com), is one of only two golf courses in the country (the other is on Grand Turk). The 6,560-yard, par-72, 18-hole course was designed by Karl Litten of Boca Raton, Florida, and is owned by the Turks and Caicos Water Company. It is...

Conch Festival draws big, hungry crowd

Another year, another tasty success! The 8th Annual Turks and Caicos Conch Festival was a culinary and cultural winner, with thousands turning out for the event which paid tribute to the local icon, the conch. Chefs from 12 local restaurants participated in the marquee “conch-e-tition,” where the conch masters at Hemingway’s at the Sands Resort ended Bay Bistro’s two year winning streak, taking home the title of Best in Show. In the highly anticipated mojito-making contest, top honors went to the Junior Brown of Bay Bistro. The competition...

Bar hopping in Provo, know where to go and when to leave

Like all small towns every establishment has its hardcore regulars.  Like clock work they stroll in, take their posts and hold down the bar until closing time.  Unlike these “fixtures of habit” are the young set, chasing down a good time from happy hour till last call.  They “bounce” from one spot to the next on a whim or a whisper, all depending on the their mood and budget. With all the entertainment options Provo has to offer you’ll probably need the inside scoop to stay on track with the...

Upscale shopping scene in Providenciales, Grace Bay

Turks & Caicos is practically the definition of a “sun & fun” beach destination. White sand stretches for miles along the coast. A scuba scene that attracts all divers of all levels. Stylish shops where you’ll find everything from island fashion to designer jewels. Romantic hideaways that feel a million miles away from the world. Though each island has its own vibe and charm, we’ve focused on the most popular island in the Turks and Caicos, Providenciales. Caribbean artwork and conch shells are top picks for souvenirs. You’ll...

TCI Unrivaled Dive Destination

Just another day in paradise.  We took our divers to our 18th century British war ship, the Endymion. Clearly one of the most beautiful shallow reef dives in the world. The unsalvaged wreck has 18 canons and 9 huge anchors. This is a dive not to be missed. Then to top the day off, we saw 15 whales and got in the water three times with them. Now the divers are out doing a night dive. Can’t get enough. Next we will end the eveing at Coral Reef Bar and Grill eating delcious Lion fish and cracked conch, sipping on our rum punches and...

FOOLS REGATTA: A FUN ISLAND TRADITION IN THE TURKS AND CAICOS

The Fools Regatta in the Turks and Caicos Islands is a fun and unique Turks and Caicos tradition that celebrates a great legacy in sailing, and makes for a fun day at the beach. The Regatta started out years ago as an April Fool’s Day event, but has since meandered around the calendar and has taken different shapes and forms. But fun and sailing are still the two hallmarks of the day. All sorts of sailing vessels will be on display, including native Turks Island sloops. And, the event is a fundraiser for the folks hoping to build a National...
